Foods Alive Organic Raw Mesquite Powder - 8 oz. bag
Mesquite meal is a traditional Native American food produced by gathering ripened seed-pods from the mesquite tree and grinding them into a fine powder. Used as a staple food for centuries by desert dwellers, this high protein meal contains good quantities of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc, and is rich in the amino acid lysine as well.
Organic raw Mesquite powder:
Our raw Mesquite powder has a sweet, rich, molasses-like flavor with a hint of caramel which blends well into smoothies or other drinks, especially those made with cacao and maca. Our mesquite is a “finely-ground raw powder” – most mesquites on the market are quite coarse and grainy. Can be used like carob powder also.
Why Raw Mesquite Powder:
Our organic mesquite is a nutritious powder with a sweet, nutty flavor, suitable for use in baking or as a seasoning on food and in drinks. The powder is ground from the seed pods of the mesquite plant, also known as algorroba (Prosopis juliflora), a leguminous plant found in arid areas around the world, including parts of South America and the southwestern U.S.
In desert areas of the Americas, mesquite seed pods have long been used as a food source by the indigenous peoples, who traditionally ground them into a powder to be used as a flour or processed into a sweetener, a sweet beverage, or a fermented alcoholic drink. Today, mesquite powder is proving to be a versatile food with a high nutritional and flavor value.
Mesquite is also highly effective in balancing blood sugar. Because its sugar is in the form of fructose, which does not require insulin for metabolism, mesquite helps maintain a constant blood sugar level for a sustained period of time. It supports the diet of diabetics, and helps maintain a healthy insulin system in others.
Because mesquite powder is ground from the entire pod, including the seed, it is high in protein (11-17%). It is also rich in:
* * Lysine
* * Calcium
* * Magnesium
* * Potassium
* * Iron
* * Zinc
* * Dietary fiber
Mesquite is highly effective in balancing blood sugar. For thousands of years, Native Americans in the Southwest and Mexico relied on mesquite as a food staple, and there was no diabetes in those communities. Today, as the people have moved away from their native foods and become less active, diabetes and obesity have skyrocketed. Fifty percent of the Pima and Tohono O’odham people over the age of 35 reportedly suffer from diabetes, and it is believed that the removal of mesquite from their diets is one of the main causes.
Because its sugar is in the form of fructose, which does not require insulin for metabolism, mesquite helps maintain a constant blood sugar level for a sustained period of time. With a glycemic index of 25 and a high percentage (25%) of dietary fiber, it digests more slowly than many grains, preventing sharp rises and falls in blood sugar. Mesquite thus supports the diet of diabetics, and helps maintain a healthy insulin system in others.
Mesquite powder has social and ecological as well as nutritional value. The marketing of mesquite products harvested in arid rural areas fights desertification and provides a sustainable economic alternative to cutting down trees for rangeland, charcoal production, or other purposes.
Our organic mesquite powder can be used in breads, biscuits, pie crusts, and other raw or baked goods, where it is usually used in combination with other flours (25-30% mesquite). Because of its high lysine content, it is an excellent addition to crackers and dehydrated foods, which may be low in lysine.
The powder’s, molasses-like flavor, with a slight hint of caramel, also goes well in teas, coffees, and smoothies. It’s delicious in dairy or seed/nut yogurts and energy bars, and fruit/nut butter spreads. As a seasoning, it can be added to soups, sauces, casseroles, and virtually any vegetable or meat dishes, or even sprinkled on desserts.

Why Raw Cacao Powder:
Chocolate beans are the source of all chocolate, cocoa and cocoa butter. Cacao (Theobroma Cacao) is the fruit of an Amazonian tree which grows through out Central and South America.
Cacao powder is created by cold-pressing raw, organic cacao beans into a pressed cake separating the oil from the protein and fiber. The temperature is never allowed to exceed 120° F and is usually 104° F (all other cocoa powders are exposed to temperatures as high as 300° F!). A high-accuracy thermometer monitors the process. The remaining dry ‘cake-like’ material is then cold-ground and fine-milled so that only the finest, most bio-available raw cacao particles become the finished product. This allows for maximum digestion and antioxidant absorption.
Today organic, raw cacao is gaining in popularity as a nutritious raw superfood. Cacao is incredibly rich in Magnesium and is most likely the number 1 source for this essential mineral. Other essential minerals present in Cacao are Calcium, Zinc, Iron, Copper, Sulfur, Magnesium and Potassium. The cacao bean also contains more antioxidant flavanoids than any other food tested – including blueberries, red wine and green tea. In fact studies have shown Cacao to have over twice as many antioxidants as red wine and three times as much as green tea.
Raw cacao contains many chemicals that enhance physical and mental well-being, including alkaloids, proteins, magnesium, beta-carotene, leucine, linoleic acid, lipase, lysine, and some neurotransmitters such as dopamine and anandamide which is the so-called “bliss” chemical associated with the feeling of being in love. Raw chocolate also contains theobromine which is similar in effect to caffeine.
How to Use Our Organic Cacao Powder:
Add cacao powder to all your favorite smoothies, teas, coffee mixes, protein drinks, desserts or anything else you can think of. Just one or two spoonfuls can transform any recipe into a healthy chocolate treat. It even goes great on top of fresh fruit! Delight your friends with the best food ever! Enhance your pleasure to the maximum…enjoy!

Why Organic Maca Powder:
Although unrelated to Ginseng, Organic Maca is often referred to as Peruvian ginseng because of its similar health-related properties. To Andean Incas, Organic Maca, a sweet and somewhat nutty-tasting dried root, is considered a delicacy. Organic Maca boiled in water makes a drink sweeter than cocoa. The delightfully fragrant powder is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorous and iron, and contains trace minerals, including zinc, iodine, copper, selenium, bismuth, manganese and silica, as well as B vitamins. It also contains four alkaloids proven in scientific investigation to nourish the endocrine glands, including the reproductive system of men and women.
The Maca plant (Lepidium meyenii) is a mat-like perennial that grows between 13,000 and 14,500 feet above sea level in the high Andean plateaus of Peru. Its tuberous roots resemble those of its relative the radish. Organic Maca pudding and jam are popular among Andes natives.
Traditionally, native medicine practitioners and herbalists have recommended maca for:
* Stimulating and regulating the endocrine system
* Stimulating fertility in both men and women
* Supporting the immune system
* Increasing energy, stamina and endurance, reducing chronic fatigue
* Enhancing libido, treating impotence
* Revitalizing seniors, mentally and physically
* Treating menopausal symptoms
Scientific studies are gradually confirming the health effects attributed to this prodigious plant since the time of the Incas. Because of its multiple effects, it has a wide range of applications– from improving athletes’ performance to fighting infertility. The effects demonstrated on fertility and sexual activity could be due to an action in the pituitary gland which affects sexual maturation. Likewise, Organic Maca could activate the calcitonin hormone, secreted by the thyroid gland and the parahormone of the parathyroid gland, which regulates the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Alkaloids of Maca could act as stimulants of red corpuscle formation and in human and animal reproduction.
How to Use Our Organic Maca Root Powder:
Foods Alive Organic Maca Root powder, which has a somewhat nutty taste, blends well with cereals, ice creams, juices, milks, yogurts, pies, cakes, smoothies, cookie fillings and desserts and can be added to a variety of recipes. 2-3 tsps per day is the suggested use of the powder.

Why Organic Jungle Peanuts:
The peanut, while grown in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world, is native to the Western Hemisphere. It probably originated in South America and spread throughout the new World as Spanish explorers discovered the peanut’s versatility. When the Spaniards returned to Europe, peanuts went with them. Later, traders were responsible for spreading peanuts to Asia and Africa. Peanuts, also known as groundnuts, are now grown in 108 countries.
The forests of the Amazon contain places where wild peanuts have survived undisturbed for thousands of years, including the southern area of Ecuador. These ancient varieties of peanuts offer unique flavors and appearances to consumers. Foods Alive wild rainforest peanuts have a beautiful striped color and smooth, rich flavor that many people find far more pleasing than mass grown commercial peanuts.
Many of the natural regions where wild peanuts grow are being threatened by modern development pressures, and the wild strains of peanuts are threatened along with the ancient communities that live in these forests. Foods Alive peanuts are harvested by the Ashuar people of southern Ecuador, an area with incredible richness in biodiversity.
The indigenous group of approximately 4,300 Ashuar people has title to roughly two million acres of primary forest. The Ashuar are one of an increasing number of Amazonian indigenous groups who are organizing against oil exploration activities that threaten their territory. Although the Ashuar have demanded that no oil development occur on their land, ARCO has the exploration rights to two areas in their territory that encompass 2.5 million acres. The Ashuar insist that all communities affected by proposed development must play a part in deciding how traditional land is used. The Ashuar are putting pressure on ARCO and the Ecuadorian government to recognize there right to self-determination.
Jungle Peanuts are great for snacking and go especially well with raw chocolate. Try a bag in your kids’ lunchbox!
